Vimeo will let you download (but not stream) 4K videos

Vimeo will let you download (but not stream) 4K videos

YouTube embraced 4K video a long time ago, but Vimeo is at last catching up... well, more or less. The internet media hub now lets you download 4K clips from both Vimeo Pro members and Video On Demand providers. If you just snagged a Retina iMac or a lower-cost 4K display, you now have one more source that will do justice to your extra-sharp screen. However, there's no streaming here. As Vimeo explains, it's waiting for the technology to make this technology work -- not many people have 4K-capable displays, and internet connections typically aren't speedy enough to deliver that many pixels in real time. Even so, it's an important upgrade if you've been meaning to watch Video Game High School and other online productions in the highest resolution possible.

Barack Obama just became the first US president to write a computer program

Remember that Hour of Code event we mentioned earlier today? The one that had President Barack Obama hosting a computer science workshop at the White House? Turns out the president used the event to mark a new milestone in American history: He's now the first US president to write a computer program. Specifically, the president used Google's Blockly tool to craft a tiny segment of code to draw a square. It's not a very useful program, but its creation is symbolic of the event's message -- with a little effort, anybody can learn to code. Even one of the busiest men on the planet.

Microsoft says private data 'at risk' in court case

Microsoft says private data 'at risk' in court case

Microsoft argued Monday in a court brief that an order requiring it to give US prosecutors data stored in Ireland could "put all of our private digital information at risk."
The brief with the US Court of Appeals in New York comes with prosecutors seeking customer emails in a narcotics probe, with the data stored in Microsoft servers in Ireland.
A lower court ruled that the US tech giant must hand over data sought in the probe, dismissing Microsoft's claims of "extraterritorial" authority.

Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith said the case could set a dangerous precedent, and invite other countries to take similar actions.
"The filing begins by imagining how the US government might react if the shoe were on the other foot," Smith said in a blog post.

"For example, how would the Unites States react if a foreign government attempted to sidestep international law by demanding that a foreign company with offices in the United States produce the personal communications of an American journalist?"
Smith said that if the US prevails, "how can it complain if foreign agents require tech companies to download emails stored in the US? This is a question the Department of Justice hasn’t yet addressed, much less answered."

In the court brief, Microsoft said, "The power to embark on unilateral law enforcement incursions into a foreign sovereign country -- directly or indirectly -- has profound foreign policy consequences. Worse still, it threatens the privacy of US citizens."
A ruling requiring Microsoft to turn over the data "would put all of our private digital information at risk, not just emails, but everything else we store on remote computers collectively called 'the cloud' -- a veritable 'cache of sensitive personal information' saturated with the highest constitutional privacy rights."

Microsoft had argued that the court order was invalid. But prosecutors contended that it must comply with the order and US Magistrate Judge James Francis ruled in April that "it has long been the law that a subpoena requires the recipient to produce information in its possession... regardless of the location of that information."

The case comes amid rising concern about US surveillance following revelations of snooping disclosed by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden. Leading tech firms, including Apple and Verizon, have filed briefs supporting Microsoft.
Smith said Microsoft "complies with lawful orders from US authorities" but that the government "should follow the processes it has established for itself for obtaining physical evidence outside the United States."

He added that "the warrant issued here cannot reach emails stored in Ireland, and as we argue in our brief, we believe the lower court's judgment should be reversed."

Video game pioneer Ralph Baer dies aged 92

Video game pioneer Ralph Baer dies aged 92

It's a sad day for gamers: Ralph Baer, one of the cornerstones of the early video game industry, has died at 92. Details of his passing aren't immediately available, but there's no question that gaming would be very different without him. He co-developed what would become the first home game console, the Magnavox Odyssey; he also helped make the memory game Simon, and came up with the gameplay concept that would ultimately lead to Nolan Bushnell's Pong. Importantly, he didn't stop inventing. He was still exploring electronics well past the usual retirement age, and had more than 150 patents under his belt. We'll miss you, Ralph.

Microsoft's smart Android lock screen now shows the weather

Microsoft's smart Android lock screen now shows the weather

Microsoft's experimental Garage team has been busy -- hot on the heels of a Torque update, it's releasing a big upgrade to Next Lock Screen. The refreshed Android front end now shows the weather, so you won't be caught off-guard by rain on the way to a lunch meeting. Personalization is also more important here; you can use your home screen wallpaper as a backdrop if you like, and hide the status bar if you find it unsightly. This won't necessarily have you ditching your usual Android lock screen (especially not if you're a fan of Lollipop's notifications), but it's worth a try if you like quick access to apps and info.

BlackBerry, NantHealth launch cancer genome browser

BlackBerry, NantHealth launch cancer genome browser

BlackBerry Ltd and NantHealth, a healthcare-focused data provider, launched a secure cancer genome browser on Sunday, giving doctors the ability to access patients' genetic data on the BlackBerry Passport smartphone.

Earlier this year, BlackBerry bought a minority stake in privately held NantHealth. The mobile technology company sees healthcare as one of the niche sectors in which it has an advantage, due to the heightened focus on patient privacy and BlackBerry's vast networks that can manage and secure data on mobile devices.

The company said the cancer genome browser on the BlackBerry Passport enables deep, interactive reporting on genomics data for physicians. It gives oncologists a tool to view individual genetic alternations in a disease and allows them to highlight relevant treatment options.
BlackBerry launched the square-screened Passport device in September, the oddly shaped device was fashioned in a sense to tailor to the needs of the physicians, with a wider screen that allows for better viewing of X-rays, scans and documents.

"Our partnership with BlackBerry has really been able to create a scalable super-computer in the palm of the hands of the doctor," said Patrick Soon-Shiong, chief executive of NantHealth.
BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen said he expects this roll-out to get healthcare professionals interested in the Passport‎.

The genome browser is fully encrypted to allow deployment to enable clinicians to securely access patient data as soon as it is available, wherever they are.

The browser will be demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January and it will be pre-loaded on BlackBerry Passport devices and available to the professional community in early 2015. The browser will also be available on certain other devices running on rival platforms, but secured by BlackBerry's network.

California-based NantHealth, whose cloud-based platform already connects thousands of medical devices in hospitals, was founded by Soon-Shiong, a surgeon and businessman, who made billions of dollars selling his two former companies, American Pharmaceutical Partners and Abraxis BioScience.

Soon-Shiong said the BlackBerry and NantHealth will continue to collaborate on software and hardware, and he said that the two are already working on a new device that will revolutionize the transport of big data sets. Details on this will be outlined early next year.

Sony investigator says cyberattack was 'unparalleled' crime

Sony investigator says cyberattack was 'unparalleled' crime

LOS ANGELES/BOSTON, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Forensics experts hired by Sony Corp to investigate the massive cyber attack at its Hollywood studio said the breach was unprecedented, well-planned and carried out by an "organized group," according to an email obtained by Reuters on Saturday.
Kevin Mandia, the top executive at FireEye Inc's Mandiant forensics unit, made the comments in an email to Michael Lynton, chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE).
They are among the first comments about the investigation to be made public, yet they do not discuss what people most want to know: The extent of the damage to the studio's network or who was behind the campaign, the most destructive cyber attack reported to date against a company on U.S. soil.
The destructive attack knocked much of Sony's network off line with malware that wipes drives of PCs, making them unable to operate. It is expensive to repair them because each drive needs to be manually replaced or re-imaged.
People close to the investigation have told Reuters that North Korea is a principal suspect, yet a North Korean diplomat has denied that his nation is involved.
Lynton forwarded a message from Mandia to employees.
Mandia, whose firm has probed some of the biggest cyber attacks to date, said in his email that "The scope of this attack differs from any we have responded to in the past, as its purpose was to both destroy property and release confidential information to the public."
He added that "The bottom line is that this was an unparalleled and well planned crime, carried out by an organized group, for which neither SPE nor other companies could have been fully prepared."
FBI spokesman Joshua Campbell said the agency concurred with Mandiant's analysis the attack went undetected by standard anti virus software, but declined to discuss progress in the agency's investigation.
Daniel Clemens, chief executive of boutique cybersecurity firm PacketNinjas, said that while the attack was unprecedented in impact, "There are many things Sony could have done to prepare and defend against this attack."
He added that if the government launches probes into the breach, they are likely to find that Sony did not have all necessary safeguards in place to fend off and uncover hackers.
